Automated Contrast Sensitivity Testing
INNOVA Systems and NCI are pleased to introduce INNOVA's Automated Contrast
Testing. This software, 3 years in development, provides "Bullseye" optotypes with
rotationally symmetrical images, traditional linear sine gratings, letter contrast, visual
acuity and fully random scripted automated testing.
NCI/INNOVA's Bullseye Optotypes
Bullseye optotypes present a "best case", repeatable contrast test result by eliminating bias from non-rotational
symmetric optical aberrations such as residual astigmatism, coma, trefoil, etc.
NCI/INNOVA's Linear Sine Gratings
Accurate traditional linear sine gratings in a circular field with screen blanking, "screen blacking" and spatial
frequencies of 1, 1.5, 3, 6, 12, 18.75, 24, 30, 38, 48* and 60* CPD. Optotypes can be presented by any specific
angle (to a resolution of .1 degree) in any scripted or random order.

NCI/INNOVA's Letter Contrast
Innova's exclusive validated letter contrast displays Sloan letters in .1 log unit increments from 1% to 100%.
Contrast "Flash" allows you to verify patient response using either the ProVideo™ screen repeater or just the
remote control.
Other Optotypes and Tests
The NCI/INNOVA Script Processor allows you to specify a test protocol that includes bullseye and linear sine
gratings, contrast letters or any standard acuity test, combined in one protocol or scripted as separate
protocols. In addition, all of the standard acuity tests of the ProVideo Basic™ are available along with the
custom 32 button USB remote control.
NCI/Innova's Script Processor (Patent Pending)
The core of this system is the NCI "Script Processor" which allows for the development of a test protocol that independently drives the operation of the
software. A proprietary "script language" allows Innova to supply standard testing protocols or protocols developed to your specifications.
The script processor also allows for the development of tests incorporating interactive responses, response timing, forced choice, blanking periods of any
duration, any optotype or test including bullseye sine gratings, linear sine gratings, letter contrast or any standard acuity test.
System Highlights
- Test times as little as 10 minutes/eye
- Calibrated contrast to 0.4% with 85cd/m2 output @ 3500-3800K
- Mesopic testing at 2-4 cd/m2
- Wireless patient/administrator response transmitter
- Test reliability index
- Detailed test analysis report
- Graphic multi-test or single test reporting
- File output for all reports
- Sinusoidal tests allow for any spatial frequency including ANSI recommended 1.5, 3, 6, 12, 18.75 CPD
- Bullseye sine grating scripted tests
- Linear sine grating scripted tests
- Letter contrast scripted tests
- Visual acuity, research or screening scripted tests
- Uses the ProVideo Basic™ 32 key USB remote control for visual acuity or manual contrast testing in addition to scripted testing.
- Menu driven test selection from either the wireless response transmitter or the USB remote control

2004 Validation of NCI Letter Contrast Test
The 2004 Version of the NCI software, installed in a Dell
computer was used for a clinical test of letter-recognition
contrast thresholds. The study by Dr. Brown, Khanani and Xu
was published in the November 2004 Issue of The Journal of
Cataract & Refractive Surgery. Installation of the software,
calibration of the equipment/monitor and, technical support for
the study were provided exclusively by NCI (Steve Nordstrom).
No other software, including any that may be sold by a
competitor, was used in this study.
